Teach
Mark Mann / Studio Sessions
Financial District, New York City
There are a thousand ways to learn photography. Books, YouTube, online courses. Most of them will teach you how to use a camera. None of them will teach you what happens in the room between you and another human being when you need to make a picture worth making.
That part takes years. I've had thirty of them — shooting for a living in New York, making portraits of people you've heard of and people you haven't. The approach is the same either way.
This is my studio. Where I actually work. You're welcome to spend a day here.
What we work on
Whatever you need. Camera basics. Studio lighting. How to direct a person who doesn't want to be in front of a camera. Post-production. Printing — and I mean real printing, up to 44×60 inches on a Canon P4000. Film scanning. All of it, or one thing, depending on where you are.
We figure that out on a ten-minute call before you come in.
Bring a subject
Most sessions need a human in front of the camera. Bring someone — a partner, a friend, whoever sits still long enough. Or I can arrange a model and hair and makeup for $400. Either way we need a person in the room.
Some sessions — camera basics, lighting theory, post-production, printing — don't need a subject at all. We'll figure out what you need on the ten-minute call.
